the other way is to use some nice thick walled tube with inside diameter the same as the diameter of the shaft. cut the drive shaft in two, slot either ends of the shaft into tube and you can make it as long (or shorter if you cut a chunk of the shaft away) as you want from the original length. weld the ends of the tube to the shaft and drill a few holes right through the tube and shaft and use bolts though to lock them together for extra strength. its a bodge, but it works a treat!

Thousanths (I know I can’t spell)of an inch are pretty small and that is what my feeler guages measure. Wouldn’t a thousanth be a metric devision of an inch then!?! Never used them though as I’m a carpenter. I use Inches all the time mind as they are easy to see(my eyes aint so good!) and on a building site it can be gloomy! They also devide into 2/3/4/6/8/16/32 and 64. Now, am I missing something here? I thing the humble inch is the most useful of all increments!

Personally I like cutting the axle and sliding a piece of pipe on it and welding it together, just have to make sure that you have a very tight fitting piece of pipe to keep straight and balanced as best as possible….. But you would not care :)
