Danny Gatton is a wicked guitar player. good thing he had Buddy Emmons around- that way there was one person in the band that could keep up with him! i have to say though, switching to the Tele might have been the best choice he ever made- that’s the ugliest les paul i have ever seen, and i’m a les paul guy!

Y’all ever hear “Stratosphere Boogie” by Jimmy Bryant? You KNOW Danny dug Jimmy! Mr. Gatton took the guitar beyond and into the next galaxy. His use of banjo rolls creates those fast triplets. Any guitarist, no matter what their style is, can learn an awful lot from Danny. Superb!

albert, my brother played behind him for 18 years on the drums, it’s not “sped up”. i assure you.

  8. hotrodius says:

Albert, you’re an IDIOT. I saw him in person, dipsh**

Danny is great! Some glitches in the tape may indicate a slight playback speed discrepency, however it may be the delay effect on the guitar that creates the impression that the tape has been sped up.

albertfish69 I have heard 20 live shows of Gatton in the 70’s and for sure it is mind boggling guitar playing but his right hand picking is just as amazing as his speed, let alone his mastery of all the styles, and all the different types of guitars he can play…

  11. Samuijazz says:

He is of course playing with a pick AND with at least one finger plucking up, so he can do jumps most single pick players can’t, plus Nashville gave a premium to super right hand chops, and he was one of th best. This is pretty standard fiddle tune speed. Speedy West played steel with Jimmy Bryant who was one of Gatton’s early influences with Hank Garland.
As amazing is Buddy Emmons who can keep up on PSG even if he gets cut off just as he hits stride.

    its not sped up.
this is a style of music.
    its called jazz boogie
    its a real thing lol
just cuz u cant play that fast doesnt mean a proffesional musician cant….

  13. vorpalknives says:

Danny needs no speeding up to sound like this. I agree, I have listened to a lot of his playing, and he can play faster than this. But his speed is not his greatest achievement. He was born with unique genius for phrasing and sophistication. To me, he will always be the best. R.I.P., Danny.

  14. chucksguitarshop says:

I miss him. I apologize. I meant to say Jimmy Bryant… but my head has been elsewhwere since Danny had me so involved in researching that style of music many years ago. Danny was very inspirational to me.

  15. gattonmaster says:

Thanks chucksguitarshop; yes hard to believe and it sounds sped up but thats how awesome Danny Gatton is. This is what I’ve been bragging about; Danny Gatton on youtube for 3 years.

  16. slicktar says:

How can you guys say it’s sped up??? If you have a guitar hit an E …………then look at his fingers when he hits and e major chord and a major at around 1:15 to 1:20.

  17. albertfish69 says:

ive heard him play faster, slower, cleaner, and sloppier. i still think this is slightly sped up just from the sound of it. and what does speedy west(a pedal steel player)have to do with this? no, ive never listened to ‘hillbilly’ music, thats why i had no frame of reference to compare this song ive heard gatton cover a million times!

  18. chucksguitarshop says:

This is NOT sped up. Danny played that fast & faster. Have you ever listened to hillbilly music? This is not unusually fast.
Check out Speedy West. He’s even worse.

  19. albertfish69 says:

this IS sped up. its obvious. not too much but its still apparent. really stupid.

  20. twirlyboggs says:

    tapped straight into the source

  21. flingar says:

    Zorba the Greek in 0.51 :) ….

  22. Cadabra65 says:

seems like a sped up cartoon, but it really happened that way..

  23. slashjr1992 says:

    how long ago is this?

  24. gattonmaster says:

Or better yet 88 was Gattons most polished year and best playing but more spectacular in the 70’s; just raw devestation I guess…

  25. gattonmaster says:

I like this show better than Club Soda, Gallaghers, Birchmere all from 88, and 89 Annapolis, and 92 Montreal because the 70’s were Dannys prime years. Between 74-78 WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
