Why do people think that everyone from Texas is a redneck?

That is so irritating. I live in Texas, and I hate country music, I don’t have a horse and have no idea how to ride one, I’ve never been “cattle ropin’”, and I don’t live anywhere near cows, my house is surrounded by trees, I have electricity, I go to the mall ALL THE TIME, and I’ve never seen a desert before. I don’t even have an accent. We’re just like everyone else from every other state. Why does everyone think we’re stupid redneck hicks?
I don’t think everyone thinks you’re a redneck hick.
It’s actually pretty interesting that you mentioned this, because a girl from Texas moved here recently and our history teacher brought up the subject because we were discussing the Alamo.
A lot of people in my class didn’t believe in the stereotype, as he took a vote. Only about a fifth of the class raised their hand, and the polls are usually pretty truthful.
I have to say, whoever commented on this, just brush it away and ignore them. You know you aren’t, and pretty soon, they’ll catch on that you aren’t.
I must say though, that the media and our current president probably contributed to the stereotype considerably. With a different president, that idea might get worn down.
Good luck and I hope this helps!
Cause the confederates are from the south.
Because that’s where Bush came from and look at how stupid he is.
It’s just because of George Bush and a couple of other rednecks
and movies that portray Texas as “Cowboy Nation”
Stereotyping. It’s a disease.
It’s called stereotyping. I am from a northern state and everyone assumes I have an attitude or will go off on you in a heartbeat just for looking at me. I do do that sometime, but no often than someone from a southern state. People can be so ignorant!
Well, most people believe that Texans are redneck because our media tells us they are. We get most of these ideas from the television actually. Cattle Roping, cartoons, cowboys. Email me if you need me to explain it anymore.
I lived in Texas for a while and loved it there, not so much for the scenery (boring!) but for its great people. Texans are open, honest, friendly and very, very proud of their state. They are the only people I know who will tell everyone else where they are from.
Texans have a lot to be proud of: Austin rocks and Hill Country is pretty. And it’s certainly not a backwards state in any manner.
But I’ve met many Texans in my travels who will travel nowhere else but in Texas. I was in Big Bend earlier this year and met a man from Dallas who now lives in Hershey, PA. He flies to Big Bend every winter to hike the peaks there. That blew me away, because he lives in PA where there are so many pretty areas to hike within a few hours’ drive. I met other Texans in Big Bend who only go to Big Bend to hike and camp; as if other states nearby mean nothing to them.
I think if people say Texans are rednecks it’s because some are. There are Texans who will wave their state flag 24/7, and the further away from the state they get, the worse they become UNLESS they are in California because no state is as beautifully diverse as California (or at least whatever hasn’t burned down yet).
But one thing I think is the ticker: the current president is from Texas and he’s given Texans a bad name. His entire administration is run by Texans and Texan-wannebees and many of us non-Texans are tired of the Cowboy mentality
Don’t let the stereotype about Texans bother you. I know better and there are many others like me who like Texans. (I think we’re called “Educated?”)
